Friends of Flinders #7

Former Men’s Health journalist and Sydneysider Scott Henderson shares his favourite local hang outs and career journey to date.

Hey Scott thanks for being a Friend of Flinders, what do you do?

I’m a health journalist, and formerly worked as the editor in chief of Men’s Health Australia. The job involves a lot of writing, reading, researching, creativity and planning. I’m fortunate to be working with a great team and getting to pick the brains of some of the world’s greatest health minds.

Where do you call home?

I’m based in Sydney but split my time between the city and my family property in the Central Tablelands of NSW near Oberon.

What’s your favourite local?

The Village Inn Paddington. It’s a great old-school pub with friendly staff and the best parmi in town.

What’s your favourite Australian Beach?

Cellito Beach on the NSW mid-north coast is one of the most beautiful spots in Australia(and the world). It’s only accessible via a rainforest walk, meaning the beach is virtually deserted and you can have the waves to yourself. Crystal clear water, local dolphins and a reliable beach break make for a perfect surf every time.

How did you get into your profession?

I have always been in pursuit of a healthy and active lifestyle and tried to combine passion and career. I studied Sport Science and International Studies in Australia and Spain. Following my studies I worked in Australia, USA, Spain, and the UK, with a focus on content production, education, and marketing in the health and sporting industries. In 2014 I started my own health and fitness PR and marketing business, which led me to meet the Men’s Health team. When a position became available to join Men’s Health – initially as the digital editor – I jumped at the opportunity to join a brand with such heritage.

What’s the most important thing about your profession?

To me the priority is giving voice to untold and deserving stories and ensuring that every story we tells enhances the lives of our audience in some way. We need to remain fair and accurate in our reporting, represent a diverse range of perspectives and always ensure that the reader comes first.

If you weren’t doing what you do, what would you be doing?

I think I’d still be working in the health industry. I had initially set out to become a physiotherapist, and intended on using my Sports Science degree as a precursor to further study.

What do you do in your down time?

It’s a Men’s Health cliché, but I love adventuring and getting out in nature – surfing, hiking, camping. I also love a great book, so if I can combine those two activities I’m a happy lad. Give me a weekend away, a tiny house in the bush and a good book and I’ll be ready to tackle anything come Monday.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Enjoy the process; it’s great to have goals and working hard will serve you well, but savour the moments on the journey.
